American Express credit cards are being added to Samsung’s digital wallet service, Samsung Pay.
For the first time, American Express users in the UK will be able to use their card through a Samsung phone.
Previously only Visa or MasterCard users were able to access the service. The addition of American Express leaves the way open for more credit cards to be added in the near future.
How does it work?
Owners of recent Galaxy and Samsung Note devices will be eligible for the Samsung Pay app, which is only available on Samsung phones.
To make purchases using your American Express, your card details must be stored in the app, which can then be presented at the till wherever contactless card are accepted.
You can store multiple cards at once, so if you’re already using the app, you won’t need to change anything to start using your AmEx.
Users of Galaxy Note8, S8 or S8+ will also be able to take advantage of iris scanner technology, allowing for even safer and more secure transactions.
How many other apps give you biometric security when you’re in a petrol station or newsagents? Not many, that’s for sure.
It’s not just AmEx
In October, Samsung also announced a partnership with the Co-operative Bank, allowing Co-op customers to make payments through Samsung Pay.
This brings the number of compatible banks to seven, including HSBC, First Direct, Nationwide, M&S Bank, Santander and MBNA.
Samsung Pay is available on all Galaxy S8, S7, and S6 devices as well the A3 2017, A5 2016 and 2017, J5 and Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch (when used in conjunction with a compatible smartphone running Android 4.4 KitKat and above).
